The Sitka blacktail deer hunt is one of the most economical ways to experience Kodiak Island while fully immersing yourself in its remote wilderness. While hunting, clients can expect to explore expansive country, and Campbell’s High Caliber Guide Service has access to a very large and diverse hunting area. Sitka blacktail deer tags are available over the counter.

Kodiak Island—often referred to as the Emerald Isle—produces some of the largest Sitka blacktail deer found anywhere. These deer are known for their striking appearance, including the distinctive double white throat patch that stands out on mature rutting bucks. Antler configuration is similar to that of their cousin, the mule deer. Kodiak bucks live a physically demanding life, and it shows in their heavily muscled bodies, built to move quickly and powerfully through steep terrain.

While pursuing Sitka blacktail deer, hunters can expect to experience everything Kodiak Island has to offer. World-class Kodiak brown bears are frequently encountered during deer hunts, and navigating through bear country is an adventure in itself. Your guide’s experience working in brown bear habitat is especially valuable when recovering deer from the field.

Mountain goats often share the same habitat as mature blacktail bucks and can frequently be observed and photographed during deer hunts. Hunters also have the option to combine deer hunts with mountain goat hunts or pair deer hunting with a fall brown bear hunt. Kodiak Island is also home to Alaska’s largest fox, exhibiting a wide range of color variations. Fox may be hunted during the late season, and some hunts may also include opportunities for river fishing, depending on timing and conditions.

Sitka blacktail deer habitat varies throughout the year. The hunting season runs from August 1 through the end of December. Sitka blacktail bucks typically remain in velvet until the last week of August. Understanding where to hunt based on the time of year is critical to success.

When timed correctly, Kodiak deer hunting can resemble an alpine mountain goat hunt, often involving nomadic travel and spike camping through high country terrain. If hunts are timed later in the season, particularly during the rut, the hunt can be significantly less physical. Regardless of the time of year, Campbell’s High Caliber Guide Service has access to productive deer habitat across Kodiak Island.

We recommend hunters plan for a minimum of five days of hunting. For Sitka blacktail, same-day airborne hunts are permitted. Transportation into hunting areas varies and may include floatplane, boat, or UTV access. Meals are a combination of groceries and freeze-dried foods. Once a deer is harvested, Sitka blacktail provide excellent table fare.

By regulation, hunters are allowed to harvest one buck per person, and all edible meat must be recovered. If hunters do not wish to take meat home, Campbell’s is happy to keep or donate it locally. Sitka blacktail venison is highly valued by Alaskans.

At Campbell’s, we believe we have access to some of the best deer hunting on Kodiak Island. Our goal is to harvest mature bucks. While trophy hunting is something we all enjoy, we are happy to accommodate a wide range of hunting goals. Whether your interest lies in pursuing record-book bucks through Boone and Crockett, Safari Club International, Pope and Young, or simply enjoying a quality hunt and harvesting representative animals, our outfit is here to deliver a first-class experience.

Groups are welcome. Once the decision is made to hunt with us, clients will receive a hunt contract that must be signed and returned along with the required deposit. Hunters then book commercial flights to Kodiak. Most arrivals occur in the evening, and an overnight hotel stay is typically required.

Hunters are responsible for purchasing appropriate hunting licenses and deer locking tags. Kodiak offers excellent dining, shopping, and outdoor stores, including grocery options and sporting goods retailers. Weather permitting, hunters are transported into the field the following morning. While in the field, we provide shelter, three meals per day, snacks, local knowledge, and trophy processing. After returning to town, trophies can be shipped to a taxidermist and meat prepared for transport home.

Before booking a hunt, hunters should consider what time of season best fits their schedule and physical ability. Early-season hunts generally offer longer daylight hours and more physically demanding hunting. Late-season hunts have reduced daylight but often provide opportunities to encounter mature bucks in more accessible terrain. Regardless of when you choose to hunt, Campbell’s High Caliber Guide Service is committed to providing a high-quality and enjoyable experience.
